Diagnostic Value of Serum Levels of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor as a Marker of Tubal Pregnancy
Authors
Abstract:
Background and purpose: Tubal pregnancy is a life threatening condition that not only causes mortality but also reduces fertility by less than 50%. In many patients, the level of βhCG does not reach detection threshold, and for definite diagnosis, long-term follow-up considering βhCG titration and transvaginal ultrasonography are needed which could lead to delay in diagnosis and treatment. The aim of this study was to determine the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) levels as a serum biomarker in the diagnosis of tubal pregnancy. Materials and methods: This descriptive study was performed in 103 pregnant women attending Sari Imam Khomeini Hospital, 2018, of whom tubal pregnancy was diagnosed in 50 at 5 to 7.5 weeks of gestational age and the rest (n=53) had normal intrauterine pregnancy with the same gestational age. An ELISA kit (Bioassay Laboratory-China) was used to measure the levels of serum VEGF. Results: The patients aged 21 to 47 years old (mean age: 31.2 ± 6.1 years). The median serum levels of VEGF in the tubal pregnancy group and individuals with normal intrauterine pregnancy were 233.5 and 157.9, respectively, indicating significant differences between the two groups (P<0.0001). When threshold concentrations of a serum VEGF level > 280 pg/ml were used, tubal pregnancy could be distinguished from normal pregnancy with a sensitivity of 86%, specificity of 67.9%, positive predictive value of 99.6%, and positive and negative likelihood ratio of 2.68 and 0.21, respectively. Conclusion: According to current findings, serum VEGF levels could be of great help in differentiating tubal pregnancy from normal pregnancy with appropriate sensitivity and specificity.

s:865:"We read with interest the manuscript entitled "Serum and peritoneal fluid levels of vascular endothelial growth factor in women with endometriosis" recently published in the International Journal of Fertility and Sterility (1). The authors measured the levels of vascular endothelial growth factor in serum and peritoneal fluid of 179 women, 90 of whom were diagnosed with endometriosis, an...

Background :Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a third leading cause of death. Methods : In this case control study, we prepared 5 cc bloods from the antecubital vein of 100 COPD patients and 40 healthy individuals as control group. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression protein level was measured by ELISA in both groups. Results : We found that concentration of...

Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor as a Marker of Tumor Endothelium1
Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is an angiogenic growth factor that is a primary stimulant of the vascularization of solid tumors. VEGF production is induced by oncogenic gene mutations in the tumor cells and by hypoxic conditions inside the tumor mass. Hypoxia and the locally increased concentration of VEGF lead to an up-regulation of VEGF receptor expression on tumor endothelial cel...
full textP-189: Investigation of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Receptors Expression in Ectopic Pregnancy
Background: Ectopic pregnancy (EP) is a complication of conception in which the embryo implants outside of uterine cavity. The increasing incidence of serious maternal morbidity resulting from EP has prompted the search for biomarkers to aid in early diagnosis and take advantage of conservative treatments. One of the effective biomarkers in EP is vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). VEGF ...

Background: Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is an angiogenic growth factor that is produced by different tissues, including the endometrium and ovary. VEGF is involved in many processes related to reproductive physiology, including angiogenesis, which is essential for implantation and placentation. It has been suggested that VEGF may be the angiogenic factor responsible for the implan...
